Looking through my bookmarks I found a link: 100 best first lines from novels
I was pleased to see that the first on the list was the line from my favourite novel - Moby Dick by Hermann Melville: "Call me Ishmael". And "Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself" from Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf is also on the list.
Don't know why but this fact makes me smile.

Nice link. In school, one of my teachers did a whole exercise about first and last lines and ever since then I notice them for books I read.

I like to compare and analyse first and last lines of a book. Although it should be a natural and not so much exciting thing for me being a philologist :)
